Chapter 20
Lexa
She balanced a thick paper plate of Edâs pot roast on her lap after Jett cut her meat and dressed her salad.
The tension between them from the other night had faded, but they lived like disagreeable roommates the rest of the week.
âYouâre quiet, Lexa.â Coral addressed her across the circle.
âJust eating.â She popped a wide smile. âGood roast, Ed.â
âThank you.â
Her argument with Zane lingered in her heart, in her bones. And as Jett updated and uploaded her résumé, she felt something for him. Like she did when they first met. What was that about?
Never mind that her arm still hurt and living with a long arm cast was nothing short of a prison sentence.
She wanted to cry. But crying changed nothing.
âThank you. The recipe is rather simple.â
âJett, you okay?â Coral again.
âYeah, why?â He shoved a forkful of meat into his mouth.
Lexa glanced over at him. What happened to us, Jett?
But why open a coffin to ask the body why it died? There was no answer. The marriage ended as marriages do.
Move on.
Sheâd decided looking for a new job was not running but advancing. As all people needed to do from time to time.
The Bower clock tick-tocked, serenading the muted sounds of plastic forks cutting against paper plates, and the hum of eating.
The light from the sconces shed a warm light across the walnut hardwood, and for a moment, Lexa couldâve sworn the sounds from beyond the window were the clip-clop of horse and carriage.
âHow are things at CCW?â Ed to Coral.
âI spoke with my father for advice, and today I commissioned an auditor he recommended. We have a sales meeting next week where Iâll ask the hard questions. But Iâm almost convinced my CEO is right. Pink Coral must go.â
âCoral, hey, I bought one of your lip glosses.â Lexa set her plate on the table Jett brought over for her. Sheâd forgotten all about her purchase. âAt a drugstore by the doctorâs office.â Lexa produced the product, still in the packaging.
âThere was one there? Where?â Coral reached for the lip gloss. âDiamond Dust. My favorite. And itâs supposedly doing the worst.â
âThe cashier said they couldnât keep the product stocked. She said they sell out.â
âShe told you that?â Coral furrowed her brow and passed back the gloss.
âYeah, so thereâs at least one store where it sells.â
Coral tapped on her phone. âIâm sending a text to Blaire, and also Sal, VP of Sales. She really said they couldnât keep it stocked? Which store?â
Lexa told her and Coral sat back with a generous, stunning smile. No wonder the prince had fallen for her.
âThank you, Lexa. I feel like Iâve taken my first deep breath in a year.â
Coralâs relief changed the libraryâs atmosphere and Lexa soaked it up.
âCoral, when did you take over CCW?â she said.
âFour years ago. My grandmother and I were on our way to Paris for the fashion season and she dropped dead in her apartment. Heart attack.â
âIâm so sorry.â
âDid you want to be the head of the company?â Chuck.
âSomeday. But not at twenty-nine.
